What is earthquake insurance the best bargain and fast service?

Question by toodd: What is earthquake insurance the best bargain and fast service?

Best answer:

Answer by StephenWeinstein
Like most insurance questions, this one is different in each place. For example, in California, the only earthquake insurance is from the California Earthquake Authority. But that insurance is only in California. There is no earthquake insurance available, at any price, nationwide. Any earthquake insurance either is only for California or is not for California; there is none that is for California and for other places.

So, the best answer is: The best for you is the insurance that is for where you live. To get any other insurance, you would have to move.

No one can say which is best for you without knowing where you live, because it is different in every place.

My area is rated by the USGS as “light and slight”, so it was really cheap. I had to request the rider on my homeowners policy.

I’m a renter in San Francisco, is earthquake insurance worthwhile?

Question by Elissa S: I’m a renter in San Francisco, is earthquake insurance worthwhile?
I’ve read the deductible is so high, that it’s worth just saving my money instead of buying CEA insurance. I live fairly simply and don’t have many huge assets – just my tv, laptop, clothing, etc. Is it worth risking to skip earthquake coverage since I’ll have to spend thousands to replace my things anyway?

Best answer:

Answer by ChunYLaw
To my understanding, even most homeowners do not buy earthquake insurance because it is very expensive and the chance of having an earthquake is low comparing to fire.
Since you are a renter, just skip the insurance and save the money for emergency.

How does earthquake insurance work?

Question by warpdesign: How does earthquake insurance work?
I’m looking into earthquake insurance for my home, but I don’t really see the point of it. The deductible is like $ 45,000. Who could afford that? Unless there’s some kind of government disaster assistance that pays the deductible for you it seems like you pay a premium just to be stuck with a deductible you can’t pay in the event you need to file a claim so you are just throwing the premium away to still be up the creek in the event of an earthquake. Or worse the earthquake does $ 44,999 worth of damage so you’re still stuck with the bill. What am I missing about this??

Best answer:

Answer by StephenWeinstein
Even if you cannot afford to pay the deductible, you can still use the money to pay off your mortgage, or part of it. For example, if you owe $ 100,000 on a home that is worth $ 150,000 (meaning that you have $ 50,000 of equity) and it is destroyed in the earthquake, becoming worth $ 0, and you do not have insurance, then you still owe $ 100,000 on your mortgage, which you still need to pay, even though you have no home. If you have insurance, and it pays $ 105,000 (the value of the home minus the deductible), then that pays off the mortgage, so you owe nothing, and lives $ 5,000 for you.
