What is a recommended company for homeowners insurance?

Question by 2cute4U: What is a recommended company for homeowners insurance?
We are buying our first house, and would like to know if anybody has any recommendations on the best homeowners insurance for our money. Thank you!

Best answer:

Answer by mbrcatz
It’s an impossible question.

See, not all companies write in all states, and the best company for a 10 year old, 3,000 square foot house with a rebuild cost of $ 350,000, probably isn’t the same best company for a 50 year old 1200 square foot house with a rebuild cost of $ 120,000.

Sure, you want an A rated carrier – but as to who’s going to give you the best bang for your buck, it’s going to depend WILDLY on about a dozen factors, that you didn’t indicate here.

So, there’s really no short cut – you’ll have to shop around, to see who’s best for your particular situation.

Can your homeowners insurance policy be cancelled if you get a big dog?

Question by Autumn Cat: Can your homeowners insurance policy be cancelled if you get a big dog?
I know someone who had a homeowners insurance policy that was cancelled because of a big dog that her friend gave her. Is that allowed?

Best answer:

Answer by Katharine R
yes, it’s allowed. It has nothing to do with the size of the dog, but rather the breed. Certain homeowners policies will not insure homes with certain breeds of dogs; usually dogs like pit bulls, rottweilers, and dobermans.

What do I need besides homeowners insurance for 1st time buyer?

Question by Tigaresa: What do I need besides homeowners insurance for 1st time buyer?
Me and my husband are in the process of building a new home in Houston,TX and I wanted to know if anybody with experience had any advise into what else we should look into besides homeowners insurance? Is that all that we need?

Best answer:

Answer by Gracielacey
I would highly advise a home warranty for at least the first year. American Home Shield offers one that is pretty good. We got our plan for like $ 450 for the year, and when we had to replace the hot water heater, it cost us all of $ 50 to have it done. We had the seller purchase the plan in our buy agreement when we got our house in November of last year.

You also HAVE TO HAVE enough life insurance per person to cover the total house loan in the case that one of you dies for some unknown reason. Life insurance is of course optional, but you don’t want to be left with a ton of bills and a mortgage to pay one one income. We got $ 100K policies for about $ 21 each a month through our insurance company, and then we have another $ 100K through my husband’s work – enough to cover our house loan.

Other than those two things, which in my mind can be total lifesavers, I can’t think of anything else.
