Question by Mrs. Fixit: Costa rica: Vehicle choice & Extra insurances what to do?
I’m traveling to Costa Rica later this month. I have reserved a vehicle. Is it highly recommended to purchase the collision damage/ theft insurance in addition to the deductible protection and the personal Liability? This is an additional cost of $ 45 a day or $ 260 to the rental. Anybody out there have any experience with or without to pass on? Also I understand the roads are horrid and we were looking for a vehicle that could carry 7 passengers..A Toyota HiAce Microbus is available. Will that give us the clearance we need to get around or would it be recommended to get the premium SUV that also seats 7 ? Any advice is appreciated both questions please!

It really depends on where you are planing to go. The roads are terrible. Terrible…. really bad. There were times when we used the 4 wheel drive, but we were going places that the Tico’s (Costa Ricans) were taking us, or told us about. If your not doing a lot of exploring, you will probably be fine with the van. I would take out the extra insurance. The roads are that bad, and do not leave ANYTHING of value in the car. Thieves target rental vehicles. They also at times stage accident with tourists. Be safe, get the insurance.

Question by Fawn: Do I need Commercial Vehicle Insurance or not?
There’s this job I’m thinking of applying for that requires me to drive my own vehicle. The job is driving around my local area changing product displays at stores for this company. Would I need to have commercial insurance coverage on my vehicle since I will be driving for my employer or will my current personal policy cover me?
I am in Indiana.

Check local laws, but where I live, that is NOT commercial use. There may or may not be a business class insurance required, again, where I live, the use would be covered by all-purpose coverages.

Have you heard of newspaper carriers having to carry commercial or extra insurance on their car?
Well we hadn’t, my son drives a 60 mile route throwing 100 to 150 plus rack papers every day and the day he drove the good car (2004 Blazer that we owe $ 10,000 on) fell asleep and wrecked on a gravel road (well the ditch actually) and the vehicle has around $ 9,000 worth of damage. Before the adjuster came to look, they denied our claim. I know stupidity isn’t a defense but neither the newspaper nor the local ins. co. told us that we needed extra coverage. How can a rinky dink paper rt. support commercial ins. on a couple of vehicles? We have been almost afraid to even drive our liability vehicles on it now. Progressive may be worse or pickier than other insurance companies? – I just don’t know what to do, the banker says sue. Or we could get a loan to fix the vehicle & owe $ 19,000 on an $ 11,000 vehicle or just tow it ito our yard & let it set.
They didn’t have a written application 6 years ago and at that time no one in our family was doing a paper route. Since that time we have just added and deleted vehicles and kids to our policy. And no I never read the full policy that comes in the mail.

If you insurance policy has a commercial use clause you may be out of luck. I would talk to a good lawyer to see if you have a case or not.
